About Puakenikeni (Fagraea berteriana)

Puakenikeni is not native to Hawaii, but introduced. It became popular in the 1930\'s and was given the name Pua Kenikeni - which translates to \"ten-cent flower\", the price the flowers were sold for. In Hawaii this flower continues to shine as a favorite lei flower. Starting as a creamy white bloom, it changes to yellow and finally to a robust orange. Its complex scent also develops over time, starting with a strong, sweet aroma often compared to a blend of jasmine, gardenia, and pikake, with notes of clementine and waterlily, and developing into cinnamon and melon as it ages. It is unsurprising then that it is a symbol of transformation and the passage of time. Giving puakenikeni is a gesture of love and honor, a gift to express deep affection and aloha.
